Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers about our programs, equipment, compliance, financing, freight, and what six months of support actually looks like.
General / Getting Started
What does OTR Consulting actually do?
OTR Consulting helps people enter the trucking business with the truck(s) already secured — newer-model equipment lined up in advance and included as part of a complete package — plus a trucking operation built from the ground up, a launched business, and six months from the day your agreement is fully executed: owner courses, the operation built around the truck, then the daily job with you.
Do I need trucking experience to get started?
No. OTR Consulting works with first-time owners as well as experienced owner-operators and fleet owners. We help build the foundation and guide you through your first six months regardless of your starting experience level.
Do you work with clients outside Arizona?
Yes. We're based in Phoenix, Arizona, and we work with clients nationwide.
How is this different from just buying a truck myself?
Buying a truck on your own still leaves you to find freight (brokers rarely work with a brand-new authority), get compliance right, dispatch every day, and learn the back office — payroll, bookkeeping, settlements — while the truck sits. OTR Consulting includes the truck(s) as part of a complete package: the business structure, compliance foundation, dispatching, operating systems, and vendor relationships, plus six months from the day your agreement is fully executed: owner courses, drivers and systems, then the daily operating job — including dispatch.
Programs & Fit
How do I know if I should start with 1, 2, or 3 trucks?
It depends on your available capital, desired involvement, and long-term goals. We'll match fleet size to your capital and involvement during your consultation.
Can I grow from the 1-Truck Program into a larger fleet later?
Yes. The 1-Truck Program is a common and natural starting point for owners who plan to add trucks as their business and experience grow — the 2- and 3-Truck Programs follow the same methodology.
Do I need to drive the truck myself?
Most clients hire drivers on every program, including one truck. You can drive a 1-Truck Program yourself if you want. The 2- and 3-Truck Programs are built around hired drivers — you manage the operation rather than driving.
Do I need a CDL?
No — not if you hire drivers, which is how most clients operate. The person behind the wheel needs a valid CDL. You only need one if you plan to drive.
Equipment
What kind of trucks are used in these programs?
Newer-model sleeper tractors appropriate to your program. We don't publish specific makes, models, or years, since equipment sourced for each client's package can vary.
Does OTR Consulting provide the truck(s)?
Yes. OTR Consulting secures the truck(s) for your program in advance, and they're included as part of your complete package, along with the business setup, systems, and six months of support. When the deal is funded, the title is signed directly over to your business — the truck is a company asset in your name.
Who holds title to the truck?
When the deal is funded, the title is signed directly over to your business. The truck becomes a company asset in your name — not something leased, rented, or held by OTR Consulting.
Compliance & Setup
Do you help me set up my company and get my operating authority?
Yes. We guide you through forming your company (typically an LLC), obtaining your federal EIN, and applying for FMCSA operating authority to get your USDOT and MC numbers — the legal foundation every trucking business needs before it can legally operate.
What's involved in getting a trucking business compliant with FMCSA/DOT?
Trucking is one of the most heavily regulated industries in the country — federal FMCSA/DOT rules cover driver qualification, Hours of Service, drug and alcohol testing, vehicle maintenance, and safety scoring, often layered with additional state-specific requirements. We provide guidance through Driver Qualification Files, driver onboarding, Hours of Service, ELD processes, vehicle documentation, and safety procedures, so you're not decoding it alone — see our Resources section for a general educational overview. Requirements vary based on your individual circumstances and applicable regulations, so this isn't a substitute for legal or regulatory advice.
Do you handle insurance, legal, or accounting for me?
We coordinate and make introductions for services like insurance, but we don't provide legal, tax, accounting, insurance, or lending services directly. We recommend working with qualified, licensed professionals in each of those areas.
Financing
Do you offer financing?
OTR Consulting doesn't provide financing directly. Because this is a new business, traditional lenders tend to view it as higher risk, which can make outside financing harder to secure than it would be for an established company — so most of our clients fund their investment in cash. You're always welcome to pursue financing on your own through a bank or lender if that's the right path for you.
Is seller carry-back financing available?
In some cases, yes. Depending on the specific package, a small portion of the investment may be available through seller carry-back. This is evaluated case-by-case and isn't available on every opportunity, so it should be viewed as a potential supplement to your investment rather than a primary funding source.
Freight & Operations
Do I get dispatching?
Yes. Dispatching is included. We work the freight and the daily plan with you — covering trucks and keeping them moving — instead of leaving you to learn dispatch after the truck is already on the road.
Will you help me get an Amazon Relay account?
We can help you prepare for and apply to Amazon Relay, drawing on our team's direct experience operating within the program and helping other carriers get set up. Amazon determines approval, not OTR Consulting, so we can't guarantee acceptance — but we help you put your best operation forward as one channel within a diversified freight strategy.
How do I make money with my trucking business?
Revenue comes from moving freight, and we help you build a diversified strategy rather than relying on one source — including Amazon Relay, freight brokers, load boards, and direct shipper relationships. During your six months of support, we help you evaluate rates, understand your operating costs, and find the freight mix that works for your operation. Clients currently average $50,000 in net profit per truck, per year, based on actual settlement data across current OTR Consulting clients. Past performance does not guarantee future results — individual results vary based on freight rates, driver retention, market conditions, and how the business is operated.
Investment & Support
How much does each program cost?
Program Investment is $189,000 for the 1-Truck Program, $289,000 for the 2-Truck Program, $379,000 for the 3-Truck Program. That covers the truck(s) secured as part of the program, plus business foundation and setup, compliance and safety implementation, operational setup, launch assistance, and six months of consulting and support. It is not a truck price. Program Investment is confirmed during your consultation and can vary depending on equipment and additional third-party costs that may apply.
What happens during the six months of support?
The six months start the day your agreement is fully executed. First you sit through one-on-one courses on running the company — compliance, CSA scoring, inspections, the trucks, dispatch (including meeting the dispatch team), and the language of the industry. Then we stand up drivers and systems. Once trucks are moving, we stay on the daily job with you: dispatch, ratecons, always hiring, and when to add trucks. You own and operate the company; we work alongside you.
What happens after the six months of support ends?
You continue operating your business independently, with the systems, processes, and experience built during your first six months. If you'd like to talk through next steps or growth plans, you're welcome to reach back out to our team.
